Alabama Opens Applications for Medical Cannabis Physician Permits

The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners has commenced accepting applications from physicians seeking a Medical Cannabis Certification Permit, coinciding with the recent issuance of dispensary licenses by the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission. This development marks a significant step forward in the state’s medical cannabis program, allowing certified physicians to recommend cannabis for therapeutic use.

To qualify for the Medical Cannabis Certification Permit, physicians must possess an active and unrestricted medical license in Alabama. They are also required to complete a four-hour educational course on medical cannabis, offered by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. This process is designed to ensure that physicians are well-informed about the nuances and implications of prescribing medical cannabis.

William Perkins, Executive Director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, emphasized the importance of compliance, stating, “The Board’s role is to administer the physician certification process and ensure compliance with the requirements established by the law.” He encouraged interested physicians to thoroughly review the necessary criteria before submitting their applications.

John McMillan, Executive Director of the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission, highlighted the milestone this represents for the state. “With the issuance of dispensary licenses, Alabama’s medical cannabis program has reached an important milestone. We appreciate a strong working relationship with the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and look forward to having physicians certified to recommend patients for medical cannabis treatment,” he remarked.

As Alabama prepares for its first sales of medical cannabis, three companies have received licenses to operate dispensaries across the state. This marks a pivotal moment in Alabama’s healthcare landscape, providing patients with new treatment options for various medical conditions.

Physicians interested in participating in this program must act quickly, as the opportunity to apply for certification is now available. The transition into a regulated medical cannabis market represents a significant change for Alabama, reflecting broader trends in the acceptance of cannabis as a legitimate medical treatment.

The Board of Medical Examiners and the Medical Cannabis Commission are working closely to ensure a smooth implementation of this program, which is poised to benefit both patients and healthcare providers in the state.
