Washington Commanders Secure Three Players with Future Contracts

The Washington Commanders have signed three players to reserve/future contracts, continuing their roster adjustments following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL season. These contracts are essential for teams as they prepare for the upcoming league year, which begins in March. They typically involve players who finished the season on practice squads or were free agents.

On Tuesday, the Commanders added offensive guard Tyler Cooper and wide receiver Nick Nash to their roster. The following day, they signed tight end Lawrence Cager. Cager, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound athlete, played college football at the University of Georgia and has been in the NFL since 2020. He has had stints with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants before joining the Commanders in 2025.

Cager’s NFL experience includes participation in 22 games, with his most recent appearance being the Commanders’ Week 16 home loss to the Eagles at Northwest Stadium. Nash, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 195 pounds, went undrafted and was initially signed by the Atlanta Falcons before being released after training camp this past season. Cooper, who measures 6-foot-5 and weighs 302 pounds, was previously signed to the Commanders’ practice squad in September but was released before being re-signed this week.

These reserve/future contracts are generally one-year deals at the league minimum, with no guaranteed money. They count toward the 90-man offseason roster limit and impact the salary cap for the next league year. This process provides players with a secured path for the offseason program and training camp, allowing them to compete for a spot on the final roster.

The Commanders’ recent moves come shortly after the team parted ways with three coaches: Kliff Kingsbury, Joe Whitt Jr., and Bobby Johnson. As the team looks to reshape its coaching staff and player roster, these signings reflect a proactive approach to building a competitive squad for the upcoming season.

These developments underscore the ongoing efforts of the Washington Commanders to strengthen their team in preparation for the next league year.
