Staten Island Gyms Buzz with New Year’s Resolution Enthusiasm

In the wake of New Year’s Day, Staten Island gyms are experiencing a surge in membership as individuals flock to fitness centers in pursuit of their New Year’s resolutions. Many facilities are bustling with activity, making it difficult to find available parking spaces. Inside, gym-goers are actively engaged in workouts, utilizing various machines such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, and weightlifting equipment.

At Intoxx Fitness, located at 2590 Hylan Blvd. in New Dorp, partner Rosario DiBernardo reports a notable increase in new memberships following the holiday season. He attributes this influx to the motivation many feel at the start of the year to improve their fitness levels in anticipation of summer. Despite the enthusiastic start, DiBernardo points out a significant challenge: retaining these new clients. He observes that attendance often declines sharply within the first three months unless individuals develop an emotional connection to their fitness journey.

“There are two types of gym goers,” DiBernardo explains. “The emotionally attached are the ones who know what they’re doing. Then you have the ones that are not attached; they’ll start strong, coming four and a half to five times a week, but that dwindles to maybe one time a week within three months.”

Among the new faces is Nicolette Capua, a 23-year-old from Rossville, who aims to maintain consistency and strength. She expresses her enthusiasm for the facilities at Intoxx Fitness, stating, “I absolutely love the equipment and the convenient amenities, such as on-site food and protein shakes. You’re able to work out freely and peacefully, and it’s absolutely amazing.”

At LA Fitness, situated at 1565 Forest Ave. in Port Richmond Center, sales counselor Nicolette Capua acknowledges the rise in attendance linked to New Year’s resolutions. However, she notes that the atmosphere remains relatively quiet, with a strong focus on individual goals among regular members.

Port Richmond resident Ana Valerio, who has lost 75 pounds and continues to build muscle, challenges the stereotype of the transient gym-goer. She believes the new year serves as a reminder for many to refocus on their fitness goals. Valerio emphasizes the strong sense of community among regulars, stating, “I’m still intimidated, especially by the weight section, but the more you come, the more they end up helping you.”

For some, the appeal of home workouts outweighs the gym environment. Rob Angelone, who oversees the fitness department at Dick’s Sporting Goods in New Springville, notes a seasonal spike in sales of fitness equipment, which begins around Black Friday and continues into the new year. This trend is driven by holiday shoppers and individuals committed to their resolutions.

Regular gym-goer Henri Perez shared his thoughts on the influx of newcomers. “Everybody has good intentions,” he said. “But the thing is, some people don’t have the time, or they don’t have the willingness, or they hit the TV and the couch as soon as they get home, and then they’re done.”

For Francis Webb, a 76-year-old retiree from Elm Park, the motivation to lose weight and reduce medication has been pivotal in his fitness journey. Webb, who enjoys heavy lifting, credits his gym routine with maintaining his health. He remarked, “If I hadn’t gone to the gym, I’d probably be in a box by now.”

As Staten Island gyms see a spike in activity driven by New Year’s resolutions, the challenge remains for many to sustain their commitment beyond the initial enthusiasm. The community spirit, supportive environment, and personal goals will be crucial in determining whether these new members will continue their fitness journeys in the months to come.
