URGENT UPDATE: Seven juveniles suffered burn injuries from a flash fire at an outdoor fire pit in Berkeley Township on New Year’s Eve. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on December 31, 2023, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials, led by Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer, confirmed that the group was gathered at a residence on North Trenton Avenue when the fire unexpectedly erupted. Two victims were urgently transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, while another was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Fortunately, all three have since been treated and released.
The remaining four juveniles were released to their parents and did not require medical attention. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the homeowner or confirmed whether any adults were present during the incident.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, the Berkeley Township Police Department Detective Bureau, the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
