Rams’ Interim Coordinator Ben Kotwica Aims for Special Teams Resurgence

The Los Angeles Rams have made a significant coaching change as they prepare for a crucial stretch in the NFL season. Following the dismissal of special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, head coach Sean McVay has appointed Ben Kotwica as the interim coordinator. This move comes in response to the Rams’ special teams struggles, which have directly contributed to three of the team’s four losses this season.

Kotwica, who has extensive experience in special teams coaching, expressed confidence in his unit’s ability to support the Rams’ aspirations for a Super Bowl run. “Just love the way that our guys are focused on the task at hand,” Kotwica remarked during his first press conference since taking on the role. “What I really like is our intentionality. We’re ready to contribute to that championship football team.”

Experience and Leadership

Although this is Kotwica’s first season with the Rams, he brings ten years of experience as a special teams coordinator, having previously worked with the Denver Broncos and the Washington Football Team. His familiarity with McVay, who coached in Washington during the final three years of Kotwica’s tenure there, provides an additional layer of continuity for the Rams.

Kotwica’s military background as a former U.S. Army captain shapes his coaching style and leadership. “He’s a stud,” said Chris Shula, the Rams’ defensive coordinator. “He’s got the military background, he’s got great energy. You can see he’s got the guys organized tight with a good pep in his step, and he loves football.”

This leadership will be crucial as the Rams prepare for a pivotal game against the Atlanta Falcons on December 18, 2023. Kotwica learned of his promotion shortly after McVay made the decision to relieve Blackburn of his duties, allowing him some time to prepare for his new responsibilities.

Focus on Improvement

One of Kotwica’s first actions as interim coordinator was to reach out to Matt Harper, who served as a special teams assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles during Kotwica’s time in Washington. Kotwica noted that Harper has quickly adapted to his new role and is aiding in preparations for the upcoming game.

Addressing the Rams’ special teams challenges, Kotwica stated, “I think we’re always improving, whether you’re winning games or losing games. There are always corrections that are made behind the scenes.” He acknowledged that several plays have impacted the team’s performance this season but expressed optimism about the unit’s readiness and urgency.

As the Rams aim to reclaim their position as contenders, Kotwica’s leadership will be essential in ensuring that the special teams can contribute positively to the team’s overall success. The Rams are determined to hold up the Lombardi Trophy early next year, and Kotwica is committed to playing his part in that journey.

In injury news, the Rams reported that wide receiver Davante Adams (hamstring), right guard Kevin Dotson (ankle), left tackle Alaric Jackson (knee), and cornerback Josh Wallace (ankle) did not practice on December 15, 2023. Defensive end Braden Fiske (ankle) participated in a limited capacity after being absent from Thursday’s estimated practice report.

With the Rams’ playoff ambitions on the line, all eyes will be on Kotwica and his special teams unit as they look to make a meaningful impact in the weeks to come.
