Holiday Travel Surge Hits Chicago as Fog Disrupts Flights

UPDATE: Holiday travel is surging across the Chicago area as thousands prepare to head out for the New Year. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) forecasts a record-setting travel season for 2025, with passenger volume set to increase by nearly 6% from last year.

At O’Hare International Airport, 28 flights were canceled by 10 a.m. today, primarily due to dense fog affecting visibility. Midway Airport is also experiencing disruptions but expects its busiest travel day on Saturday, December 27. Travelers nationwide are preparing for heightened congestion as the TSA anticipates the heaviest travel volume this Sunday.

Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez has been closely monitoring the fog conditions impacting both airports. Despite the weather, travelers reported relatively smooth journeys. Dave Kelley, heading back to Florida after celebrating Christmas with family, said, “Not too bad, no one’s yelling or anything like that. It’s fairly early, so everyone’s pretty chill.”

For those planning to drive, AAA warns that traffic congestion will peak between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. today, as families are on the move for the holidays. The combination of increased air travel and road traffic adds up to a hectic day for Chicagoans and visitors alike.

Passengers are urged to arrive at the airports early to navigate any potential delays. With the New Year fast approaching, travelers should stay updated on flight statuses and weather conditions.

As the holiday season continues, stay tuned for further updates on travel conditions and tips to ensure a smooth journey.
