UPDATE: A 24-year-old man from Rocky Top and two juveniles have been charged after a shocking series of rock-throwing incidents on I-75, which endangered drivers over a three-day period from December 19 to 21, 2023. The Rocky Top Police Department confirmed the alarming events, stating multiple vehicles were damaged and motorists faced severe risks.
The accused, Isaiah Bell, now faces a total of four counts of aggravated assault and vandalism, alongside three counts of reckless endangerment and charges of criminal conspiracy. Among the victims was a driver who suffered a stomach injury after a rock struck their vehicle, with a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old present in the car at the time. Thankfully, it remains unclear if the children were harmed.
The incidents unfolded as Bell and the two juveniles were reportedly seen throwing rocks from a bridge over I-75, as detailed in arrest warrants by WATE. One of the juveniles confessed to their involvement during questioning at the Rocky Top Police Department, significantly advancing the case against them.
Reflecting on the near-tragic consequences, Alisha Owens, one of the victims, recounted the terrifying moment: “Just going down the interstate, we saw something falling; it just happened so fast.” She emphasized, “Somebody’s life could have very easily been taken, and it’s just amazing to me that somebody would be willing to do that.”
In response to these dangerous incidents, Rocky Top Police Chief John Thomas urged parents to maintain vigilance over their children’s activities during school breaks. “Parents should definitely keep an eye on what their kids are doing. It’s great for them to socialize, but if they decide to engage in reckless acts like this, it could have bigger consequences,” he warned.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on high alert, grappling with the potential dangers posed by reckless behavior. The police department reassures the public that they are taking strong measures to address such alarming incidents and ensure the safety of motorists on I-75.
Authorities are urging anyone with further information about the incidents to come forward, as they continue to evaluate the full implications of the charges against Bell and the juveniles involved. This developing story highlights the urgent need for community awareness and responsible youth engagement.
