Trump Administration to Garnish Wages of Defaulted Borrowers in 2026

URGENT UPDATE: The Trump administration has just announced that it will begin garnishing wages for student loan borrowers in default starting in January 2026. This significant move affects approximately 1,000 borrowers who will receive official notices during the week of January 7, with additional notifications to follow monthly.

This decision impacts millions of Americans who are currently in default, defined as being over 270 days past due on their payments. The administration emphasized that borrowers will receive 30 days’ notice before any wage garnishments occur, aiming to provide adequate time for repayment options.

The move marks an end to a period of leniency that began with the pandemic-era pause on student loan payments. The Trump administration resumed collection activities in October 2023, reviving efforts to collect on defaulted loans through methods such as withholding tax refunds and other federal payments.

Persis Yu, deputy executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center, criticized this decision, labeling it as “cruel, unnecessary, and irresponsible,” especially as families grapple with stagnant wages and rising costs. Yu stated,

“As millions of borrowers sit on the precipice of default, this Administration is using its self-inflicted limited resources to seize borrowers’ wages instead of defending borrowers’ right to affordable payments.”

The Biden administration had previously sought to implement broad student loan forgiveness, but those efforts were blocked by court rulings. As of now, the administration has extended a grace period for borrowers as it navigates the complexities of student debt relief.

With wage garnishment set to begin in just a few months, borrowers are urged to prepare and seek guidance on their repayment options. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated; millions of borrowers could face significant financial challenges as the new year approaches.
