A heroic act of bravery unfolded at Bondi Beach on Sunday when a bystander, identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, intervened during a mass shooting, successfully wresting a firearm from one of the attackers. The incident, which targeted a Jewish gathering and beachgoers, resulted in at least 15 fatalities and left dozens more injured.
Ahmed, a 43-year-old father of two daughters, risked his life to tackle an alleged shooter. According to Australian officials and media reports, he was shot multiple times during the confrontation. Dramatic footage shared widely on social media captured Ahmed’s courageous actions as he attempted to disarm the gunman.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, where gunfire erupted while sirens blared. In the video, Ahmed can be seen crouching behind a vehicle before launching himself at the shooter, who had just fired his weapon. After a brief struggle, Ahmed managed to take the gun from the attacker’s hands, at which point he aimed it back at the assailant, prompting a retreat.
During a press briefing on Monday, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke lauded Ahmed for his bravery, emphasizing that “all Australians stand together against that attack.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also commended Ahmed’s actions, highlighting the solidarity displayed by police, first responders, and courageous citizens like Ahmed.
Ahmed was transported to St George Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for his injuries, which include multiple gunshot wounds to the shoulder. His parents revealed that some bullets remain lodged in his body. They had recently relocated from Syria to Sydney and expressed their pride in their son’s actions, stating he would do anything to protect others.
In an interview with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Ahmed’s father remarked, “When he did what he did, he wasn’t thinking about the background of the people he’s saving. He doesn’t discriminate between one nationality and another.”
Ahmed has two daughters, aged three and six, and his family emphasized that his instinct to help others transcends nationality. Ahmed’s cousin, Mustafa, spoke outside the hospital, asserting, “Absolutely he’s a hero. Maybe he will lose his life to save other people.”
