WVU Parkersburg celebrated its Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony on December 13, 2025, recognizing the achievements of 423 graduates who completed their academic programs during the fall semester. The event took place at the campus in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and featured a keynote address from United States Senator Shelley Moore Capito.
In a warm welcome, Trista Scarberry, president of the Student Government Association, encouraged graduates to reflect on their time at WVU Parkersburg. She emphasized the importance of perseverance, personal growth, and the relationships formed throughout their academic journeys. Scarberry concluded her remarks with an inspiring quote from her parents: “Shoot for the moon, and if you fall short, you’ll still be a shining star.”
Senator Capito’s address focused on the potential of the graduates as they enter the workforce. She urged them to “look up” to the opportunities before them, the people who inspire them, and the natural beauty of West Virginia. Capito highlighted the significance of service, leadership, and gratitude, particularly acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel and health care workers during challenging times.
“Take your talents, innovation, and expertise into the world,” Capito said, reminding graduates to carry the values and spirit of their home state with them. She congratulated the students on their hard work and expressed hope that they would return to support the community in the future. Capito has been a notable figure in West Virginia politics, becoming the first female senator from the state in 2014 and winning re-election in 2020.
Dr. Torie Jackson, president of WVU Parkersburg, also addressed the graduates, commending them for their resilience. She remarked on the importance of relationships in shaping their futures, stating, “Degrees open doors, but relationships build futures. Your legacy will be measured by the people whose lives are different because you were in them.”
The ceremony acknowledged a total of 467 degrees and certificates awarded to students who completed their programs in August and December 2025. Out of the 423 graduates, 137 participated in the commencement ceremony, marking a significant milestone in their educational journeys.
