Teen Girl Falls 100ft to Death at Queensland Lookout – Urgent Update

UPDATE: A 17-year-old girl has tragically died after falling 30 meters from a cliff at Moffat Beach in Queensland while trying to capture a sunset photo. The incident occurred around 6:40 PM when the girl climbed over a safety fence, prompting immediate emergency response.

Authorities report that the group of friends had been enjoying the sunset when they sought a better vantage point. As they attempted to return, the girl slipped, plunging to the rocks below. Witnesses, including off-duty medical professionals, rushed to assist but were unable to save her due to the severity of her injuries.

Detective Peter Hocken from Queensland Police stated, “They located the young lady and provided as much assistance as they could. Unfortunately, she passed away on scene due to the severity of her injuries.” The scene was particularly distressing for her friends, who watched in horror as the tragedy unfolded.

Emergency responders faced challenges reaching the location due to the treacherous terrain, with firefighters slipping on the rocky ground. A woman who attempted to help the girl also sustained minor injuries during the rescue attempt.

Adding to the tragedy, multiple warnings had been posted at the lookout, advising visitors to respect safety barriers. Ryan Dubyk from Queensland Fire and Rescue emphasized, “Especially at this time of year, just please respect the barriers in place. Stay back.”

The lookout, known for its breathtaking views of Moffat Beach and the Coral Sea, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Detective Hocken explained that the girls had taken an unofficial path to the lookout, which had a non-permanent barrier intended for safety.

A report will be prepared for the coroner to investigate the incident, including whether the warning signs were adequate or if further improvements are necessary. This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with climbing over safety barriers, especially in scenic but hazardous areas.

This heartbreaking event echoes past tragedies at the same location, including a 2021 incident where a 58-year-old mother fell 160 feet to her death at Windin Falls in Cairns, underscoring the critical need for safety awareness at popular lookout points.

As of now, the community mourns the loss of a young life, just days before the holiday season, marking a somber moment for friends and family. The investigation continues, and authorities urge everyone to prioritize safety and heed all warnings when visiting natural attractions.
