Respected Business Leader Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Jr. Passes at 92

Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Jr., a prominent business executive and philanthropist based in Los Angeles, died peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by family, his passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to corporate leadership and community service in Southern California.

Born on July 18, 1933, in Los Angeles, Steve grew up in Hermosa Beach, showcasing an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. He sold various products door-to-door and exhibited competitive prowess as a junior badminton champion, clinching national titles in both Boys’ Singles and Doubles from 1950 to 1951. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Occidental College in 1955, he further distinguished himself by receiving an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for his contributions to leadership and service.

Steve’s professional journey began at McKinsey & Company after he completed his MBA at Harvard Business School in 1957, where he graduated “with distinction.” In 1964, he took a significant step in his career by co-founding The Leisure Group, Inc., alongside Merle H. Banta. Their partnership, which later evolved into BHH Management, Inc., lasted over 50 years until his retirement at the age of 85.

While his corporate endeavors were notable, Steve’s dedication to the nonprofit sector truly defined his legacy. He held leadership roles as chair of the boards for the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA, Center Theatre Group, and the Board of Trustees of Occidental College, among others. His steady leadership and philanthropic efforts helped these organizations navigate growth and transformation, ensuring a lasting impact on the community.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Steve cherished time spent with family and pursued various interests with enthusiasm. He enjoyed frequent visits to Catalina Island and Mammoth, indulging in his passion for studying World War II history, practicing magic, and restoring machinery. His charm and humor shone through in every aspect of his life, especially during gatherings with his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.

Steve is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Ann Hinchliffe; daughter Lisa Hinchliffe Link (Dave); sons Stephen F. Hinchliffe III (Terry) and John Hinchliffe; four grandchildren—Andy Link (Sarah), Ryan Link, Mackenzie Hinchliffe, and Katelyn Hinchliffe; and his great-granddaughter, Stevie Rae Link. He also leaves behind his brothers Bruce (Sandra) and Doug (Robin), along with numerous relatives and friends who will miss his guidance and presence.

A private celebration of his life is scheduled for January 10, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA or to one of Steve’s other cherished charities, ensuring that his commitment to community service continues to thrive.
