UPDATE: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Twp. community, has passed away at the age of 91, on December 19, 2025. The family mourns the loss of the devoted husband to the late Ruth G. Schappell, who died on July 31, 2019.
Schappell, a lifelong resident of Perry Twp., was a cherished father and community member. He leaves behind three sons—Rodney F. Schappell, Dennis J. Schappell, and Gregory C. Schappell—and three daughters—Denise E. Schappell, Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, highlighting a legacy of family and love.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow in Zion’s Cemetery in Perry Twp.
Franklin was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and dedicated many years of his life to working at Berks Packing, where he was known for his role in producing Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996. His passions included hunting, gardening, and sports, and he was a faithful reader of the Bible.
Franklin’s commitment to his community was evident in his tireless work maintaining Zion’s Cemetery, providing care and support to those who had passed. He was preceded in death by his twin daughters, Lori L. and Dori A. Schappell, a sister, Dorothy (Schappell) Bankes, and a niece.
