Greeley Seeks New Public Works Director After Trombino’s Departure

The city of Greeley has initiated the search for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino, who left the position on December 1, 2023, after four years of service. Trombino, who previously served as the director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa, played a key role in several critical city projects during his tenure.

Among Trombino’s notable contributions was his leadership in the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement project and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program. His efforts have had a significant impact on the city, including initiating the Catalyst project, which is now poised for a citywide vote concerning a zoning ordinance passed by the city council earlier this year.

Acting City Manager Brian McBroom acknowledged Trombino’s contributions, stating, “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city. We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.” Trombino’s departure leaves a gap in Greeley’s leadership, especially as he was instrumental in progress related to new stormwater improvements. This initiative represents a substantial investment of approximately $500 million aimed at upgrading aging infrastructure and enhancing the city’s capacity to manage stormwater.

In addition to these projects, Trombino facilitated the recruitment of Alquist 3D, a company specializing in 3D printing for buildings, which collaborates with Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project. At the time of his exit, Trombino’s salary was reported to be $228,800, according to Kim Kappel, the city’s Public Information Officer.

The city has not disclosed the reasons behind Trombino’s departure, mentioning only that it is a personnel matter. Greeley is now actively seeking a new director who will be responsible for managing ongoing city projects, securing funding, and fostering communication among various departments. The anticipated salary range for this position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum potential salary of $234,800, based on the candidate’s experience. For context, the median income for Greeley residents is approximately $76,462, according to 2024 census data.

The city is aiming to fill the public works director position promptly, without appointing an interim director. Will Jones, currently serving as the deputy public works director, is set to take over as the public works director in Loveland starting on January 12, 2024. Additionally, Greeley is engaged in a search for a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who has been appointed as the next city administrator for Portland, Oregon.

As Greeley moves forward with its search, the focus will be on finding a candidate capable of continuing the significant work initiated by Trombino and ensuring the city’s infrastructure meets the needs of its growing population.
