New Lenox Library Launches Care Cabinet, Offers Free Essentials

UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just launched a crucial new initiative aimed at supporting community members in need. On December 4, 2023, the library opened a care cabinet filled with essential items and Narcan, allowing individuals to access these resources with NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

This innovative care cabinet, located in the library lobby, offers free items such as shower products, deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, chap stick, first-aid supplies, socks, and Narcan, as confirmed by Michelle Krooswyk, the library’s executive director. The initiative was made possible by a $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library.

The cabinet was originally set to open in January 2026, but Melissa Seaberg, the administrative library coordinator, expedited this date due to increasing challenges faced by lower-income residents following cuts to federal programs. “We want the community to rely on us in times of need,” Krooswyk stated, emphasizing the library’s role in connecting individuals to assistance.

Demand for the items has already been significant, with many essentials running low—especially lip balm, gloves, and deodorant—indicating a pressing community need. “Allowing people to receive assistance without judgment is essential,” Seaberg added, highlighting the sensitive nature of seeking help.

The library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan, a lifesaving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. Krooswyk encourages community members to attend training sessions on Narcan use, reinforcing the library’s commitment to health and safety.

Community support has been overwhelming, with residents even contributing supplies for the cabinet. However, the library staff requests that donations be monitored for hygiene and organized into gift bags. Monetary donations can be made through the library’s website or an Amazon wish list.

Inspiration for the care cabinet arose from a presentation by the Rock Island Public Library. “We continuously share ideas that work,” Krooswyk noted, reflecting a collaborative spirit among libraries to foster community support.

The care cabinet will remain accessible during library hours, providing essential items to those who need them. Additionally, the library plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary next year and is exploring further renovations to enhance its services.

As the library approaches this milestone, it also looks forward to launching a new café space in January and a winter reading program. The crocheted cat fundraiser, another engaging initiative, will conclude on December 16, 2023, adding a light-hearted element to the library’s offerings.

For those in the New Lenox area, the care cabinet represents a vital resource for individuals facing difficult circumstances. The library’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all community members is more critical than ever in these challenging times. Stay tuned for updates as this impactful initiative continues to evolve.
