Remembering Harold Klonecky: Esteemed Educator and Community Leader

Harold Meredith Klonecky, a respected educator and community figure, passed away at the age of 98 in Torrance, California, on November 16, 2025. His contributions to education and the Torrance community have left a lasting impact on many lives.

Born on May 22, 1927, to Irma and Constant Klonecky in Dickinson, North Dakota, Hal Klonecky laid the foundation for his career early on. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Dickinson State University, where he began teaching English and Drama. In 1955, he relocated to Torrance, California, continuing his teaching career at North High School. His passion for education drove him to further his studies, and he obtained a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California (USC).

During his tenure at Torrance High School, Dr. Klonecky served as both Assistant Principal and Principal over 25 years. He retired in 1987 but remained actively involved in the community, particularly with Torrance High School retirees. His legacy as a beloved figure among students, faculty, and parents reflects his dedication to education.

Life Beyond the Classroom

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Klonecky enjoyed a rich and active personal life. Known for his love of golf and mystery novels, he was also a talented dancer, often sought after as a partner at social gatherings. His kindness extended to both animals and people, earning him admiration and respect.

Dr. Klonecky is survived by his family, including Theresa and Jeff Heiney and their son, Erick, as well as Jen and Patrick Sullivan and their children Kieran, Aidan, Declan, and Bridget. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher Klonecky.

A public celebration of Dr. Klonecky’s life will take place on December 15, 2025, with a Visitation and Rosary from 16:00 to 20:00 at Coastal Funeral Center, located at 25001 Narbonne Avenue in Lomita. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for December 16, 2025, at 10:00 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, situated at 25511 Eshelman Avenue in Lomita. Following the Mass, friends and family are invited to a reception at Hof’s Hut at 11:30 at 23635 Crenshaw Boulevard in Torrance.
