William Henry Dietrich Remembered: A Legacy of Love and Achievement

William Henry Dietrich, a prominent transportation engineer and cherished family man, passed away on April 30, 2025, at the age of 89. A memorial celebration was conducted on May 24, 2025, at the Irvine United Congregational Church in Irvine, California, honoring his life and legacy as he would have celebrated his 90th birthday this year.

Born on December 11, 1935, in Berwyn, Illinois, Bill Dietrich spent his early years in the Midwest before relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico, during his high school years. After graduation, he pursued higher education at California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech), where he laid the foundation for a remarkable career. In the summer of 1957, he married his beloved wife, Jean, whom he met on a blind date, marking the beginning of a 67-year partnership filled with love and shared experiences.

Following their marriage, the couple moved to Dayton, Ohio, where Bill served in the Air Force. During this time, he earned his master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, further establishing himself in his field. Bill’s professional journey included co-founding DKS Associates, a firm that has made significant contributions to transportation engineering.

Throughout his life, Bill was celebrated for his kindness, wisdom, and dedication to his work. His passions extended beyond his career; he enjoyed reading, playing bridge, traveling, and golfing. Friends and family often spoke of the lasting impressions he left on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jean, along with three children: David, Douglas, and Deborah. He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen, and his sister, Marilyn.
