Minnesota United FC has bolstered its roster by acquiring midfielder Peter Stroud from the New York Red Bulls. The deal was confirmed on Wednesday, with the Loons reportedly sending $475,000 in General Allocation Money to the Red Bulls, according to a report by Tom Bogert.
Stroud, a 23-year-old player, has significant experience in Major League Soccer (MLS), having logged 1,720 minutes during the 2024 season, where he contributed three assists. In the current campaign, he played 844 minutes, showcasing his ability to impact matches. The New Jersey native has a strong soccer background, having previously been a homegrown player for the Red Bulls and spending two years in the youth system of London club West Ham United, where he played at the Under-18 and U23 levels.
As Minnesota United prepares for the upcoming season, Stroud’s versatility will be a key asset. Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 150 pounds, he is expected to fill a central or defensive midfield role, especially following the departure of Hassani Dotson to free agency after the 2025 season. Stroud’s contract with the Red Bulls includes options for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, and he earned $145,003 in guaranteed compensation during the 2025 season, as reported by the MLS Players Association. In contrast, Dotson’s previous contract was valued at $625,800.
Stroud’s collegiate career at Duke University was notable. He made history by becoming the first player to win two ACC Midfielder of the Year awards and was a runner-up for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy in 2022, which honors the top college soccer player in the country. His accomplishments at Duke demonstrate his talent and potential to excel in the MLS.
In addition to his club experience, Stroud has represented the United States at various youth national teams, further highlighting his skill set and readiness for the professional stage. His older brother, Jared Stroud, currently plays midfield for D.C. United and has previously been with St. Louis, Austin, and the Red Bulls.
This trade marks a significant addition for Minnesota United as they seek to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. With Stroud’s proven track record and potential for growth, he could play a pivotal role in the team’s aspirations.
