Marblehead Unveils Bus Honoring Community Leader’s Legacy

UPDATE: In a heartfelt ceremony on December 3, 2023, the community of Marblehead unveiled a bus dedicated to honoring Mrs. Elsie Nickerson, a remarkable 107-year-old leader whose legacy of service continues to inspire. The vibrant, floral-decorated bus, now named the Elsie Express, symbolizes hope and community spirit, transforming a previously unused vehicle into a mobile hub for generosity.

For nearly a year, the bus sat idle at Briarcliff, a Rhode Island assisted-living community, until Dave Aldrich, Mrs. Nickerson’s godson, recognized its potential. During his weekly visits to see his beloved godmother, he envisioned a purpose for the bus that aligned with her decades of dedication to helping others. “She never judged me,” Aldrich recalled, reflecting on the unwavering support he received from Nickerson throughout his life.

Mrs. Nickerson has been a beacon of hope for many, founding a soup kitchen nearly 50 years ago that now serves 175-225 families weekly. Her commitment to the community has inspired countless acts of kindness and service, making the Elsie Express a fitting tribute to her enduring spirit. Aldrich confirmed, “This is honoring her life and carrying her work forward.”

The renovation of the bus was no small feat. Aldrich partnered with the Angiulo family, who generously donated nearly $5,000 to cover repairs and towing costs. The transformation required hard work, including extensive mechanical repairs and the removal of a weathered wrap that had protected the bus for over 15 years. Aldrich remarked, “Quitting wasn’t an option. This was her bus.”

As the bus was restored to its former glory, Aldrich designed new graphics that proudly display Mrs. Nickerson’s name on the driver’s door. The unveiling took place during the Marblehead Christmas Parade, where the Elsie Express made its debut as a mobile store and a symbol of community unity. “You would’ve thought I invited her to Maui,” Aldrich laughed, recalling the joy of inviting 8-year-old Clara, a dedicated supporter, to ride along.

The impact of the Elsie Express extends beyond the bus itself. The initiative has sparked collaboration between Marblehead and Swampscott, creating unique bagel identities and special cream cheese flavors to bring the towns together. Aldrich’s Grab The Bagel (GTB) has evolved into a non-profit model that other towns aspire to replicate.

Amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, Aldrich launched Grab The Bagel as a community-driven project, dedicated to random acts of generosity. “Nothing made her happier than knowing I continued the vision she lived every day,” he said. This commitment to community service remains strong, fueling connections that uplift those in need.

As the Elsie Express rolls through Marblehead and beyond, it serves as a testament to Mrs. Nickerson’s remarkable influence and the enduring legacy of compassion and generosity she has instilled in her community. Aldrich stated, “Our work will continue long after she’s gone, but her impact will live forever.”

The community’s collective efforts and the unveiling of the Elsie Express are a powerful reminder that one person’s unwavering dedication can inspire generations. As always, Mrs. Nickerson would want to know just one thing: “How are bagel sales?”
