BREAKING: Bishop O’Dowd has just clinched the CIF 5-AA NorCal title with a nail-biting 23-20 victory over Chico! This thrilling showdown took place on Friday night, July 15, 2025, with O’Dowd traveling nearly three hours for the anticipated championship clash.
With only 90 seconds remaining, the Dragons’ defense made a game-winning fourth-down sack of Chico quarterback John Bernardez, securing the regional championship and sending their fans into a frenzy.
The victory showcased the remarkable talent of junior running back Lamar Ellis, who scored two pivotal touchdowns and continued to shine after his five-touchdown performance last week. O’Dowd’s special teams proved vital as well, delivering two crucial blocks—a field goal and an extra point—along with a kickoff return for a go-ahead touchdown.
The game started with Ellis putting O’Dowd ahead with a 17-yard run for a 6-0 lead, although the extra point attempt was blocked. Chico quickly responded with a touchdown pass to Jake Detmer, making it 7-6 after a successful PAT. O’Dowd, however, looked to regain control when fullback OC Lehner made a push from the 1-yard line, but a timeout disrupted the momentum, and Ellis was stopped short.
Chico drove down the field but stalled at the 11-yard line, leading to a blocked 28-yard field goal attempt. The first half closed with O’Dowd ahead 9-7 after Zach Brien nailed a 24-yard field goal just as time expired.
Chico took the lead early in the second half with a touchdown from Bernardez, extending their score to 14-9. Yet, O’Dowd answered back almost immediately; Trevor Erickson returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, putting the Dragons back in the lead at 16-14.
As the fourth quarter unfolded, Chico threatened again but fumbled at the 1-yard line, giving O’Dowd a critical opportunity to maintain its edge. Ellis then delivered a jaw-dropping run, weaving through defenders for a touchdown that stretched the lead to 23-14.
Chico managed to close the gap to 23-20 with a Bernardez keeper, but after a blocked PAT, the stakes intensified. With just over two minutes left in the game, O’Dowd’s defense stood tall, halting Chico’s final drive and sealing the championship with a decisive sack.
Now, O’Dowd (10-4) looks ahead to the state championship against Christian-El Cajon next week, aiming to replicate the success of their 2016 champions. This victory not only marks a significant achievement for the Dragons but also highlights the perseverance and skill of a team determined to make history once again.
Stay tuned for updates as O’Dowd prepares for the ultimate showdown in Southern California!
