Army Veteran Raises Over $1.7 Million for Retirement After Viral Video

An 88-year-old Army veteran, **Edmund Bambas**, has received an overwhelming response from the public, raising more than **$1.7 million** through a GoFundMe campaign after his poignant story went viral. The initiative was sparked by a video shared by Australian social media influencer **Sam Weidenhofer**, who discovered Bambas while interacting with followers.

The video, filmed at a **Meijer supermarket** in **Brighton, Michigan**, shows Weidenhofer conversing with Bambas, who revealed his age and the hardships he faces. “May I ask how old you are?” Weidenhofer inquired, to which Bambas replied, “I’m 88 years old.” The conversation quickly turned to why he continues to work at his age.

Bambas served in the **U.S. Army** in **1966** and had a long career at **General Motors**, retiring in **1999**. However, the veteran’s financial stability was shattered when the automaker declared bankruptcy in **2012**, resulting in the loss of his pension and health care coverage. “In 2012, they went bankrupt, and they took my pension away from me,” he explained. This unfortunate turn of events was compounded by personal tragedy, as Bambas lost his wife seven years ago, further straining his financial situation.

Bambas shared, “The thing that hurt me the most was my wife was real sick, and when they took the pension, they also took the health care coverage and all but $10,000 of my life insurance.” To manage his expenses, he sold his home and property, but he has continued to work five days a week, eight hours a day, just to make ends meet.

When asked about his dreams, Bambas expressed his desire for a better quality of life, stating, “Live somewhat the life I was hoping for.” The emotional moment in the video escalated when Weidenhofer surprised Bambas with a **$400 tip**, prompting tears from the veteran. “I don’t know what to say. It’s going to go a long way to help me,” he responded.

After sharing the video online, Weidenhofer launched a **GoFundMe** campaign to assist Bambas in retiring comfortably. As of Friday, the campaign has attracted over **62,000 donations**, contributing to the impressive total of more than **$1.7 million**.

The GoFundMe page highlights Bambas’ resilience and character, stating, “Despite everything, Ed shows up every day with quiet dignity, strength, and perseverance. His story is a stark reminder that too many of our seniors, especially veterans, face incredible challenges just to survive.” The funds raised will be directed towards his living expenses, medical care, and other necessities that enhance his quality of life.

A spokesperson for **General Motors** has not yet commented on the situation or the loss of benefits affecting former employees like Bambas.

The outpouring of support for **Edmund Bambas** reflects a broader societal recognition of the struggles faced by many veterans, particularly in their later years. His story resonates deeply, highlighting the importance of community and compassion in helping those who have served their country.
