Two Lives Lost in Urgent Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 87

URGENT UPDATE: A devastating multi-vehicle collision on Highway 87 in San Jose has resulted in two fatalities, including an adult and a child, early yesterday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. near Curtner Avenue, as confirmed by authorities from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The tragic incident involved multiple vehicles, including two Teslas and a Lexus. Authorities reported that a fourth vehicle fled the scene, leaving behind chaos and destruction. At least two additional individuals were transported to the hospital, though their current condition remains undisclosed.

Traffic on the northbound lanes of Highway 87 was severely impacted, with delays extending back to Capitol Expressway. The highway was finally reopened by 3:45 p.m., after several hours of obstruction.

San Jose Fire Department Battalion Chief Bennett Yendery described the situation as “multiple vehicles involved with fire.” Firefighters acted swiftly to contain the flames, ensuring a safe environment for their operations. Despite the presence of electric vehicles, which can pose unique challenges due to lithium batteries, the fire was extinguished without further complications, according to Yendery’s statement to CBS News San Francisco.

Officer Ross Lee of the CHP emphasized the complexity of such incidents. “We respond to crashes all the time … vehicles have many different working components,” he stated. The investigation is currently focused on determining the cause of the fire and the crash itself. “Obviously, when we have vehicles that are burnt up, we will have to examine those vehicles,” Lee added, highlighting the thoroughness required for this ongoing investigation.

The community is left reeling from this tragic event, with many expressing their condolences and support for the families affected. As authorities continue their investigation, more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
