Stephen Ross Invests in $200 Flying Taxi Service to Ease Miami Traffic

Billionaire real estate mogul Stephen Ross is investing in a new flying taxi service that promises to revolutionize travel in South Florida. The service, operated by Archer Aviation, will offer rides from Miami to West Palm Beach for $200 and aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the region.

The planned flights will utilize electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL), capable of reaching speeds of 150 mph. Ross’s investment supports a route that connects his private golf course in Hobe Sound with the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. According to The Wall Street Journal, the service could begin as early as next year, with stops at local airports in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach.

Meeting the Demand for Efficient Travel

Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer, emphasized that the booming population in South Florida makes the region an ideal location for eVTOL flights. “We believe South Florida is one of the best places in the country to do this,” he told The Journal. The company’s flagship aircraft, known as the Midnight, is designed for short trips, typically ranging from 20 to 50 miles, and is significantly quieter than traditional helicopters.

The Midnight can carry up to four passengers and has a payload capacity exceeding 1,000 pounds. Archer’s goal is to significantly reduce commuter times, with expected flight durations between 10 to 20 minutes, in stark contrast to the hour-long car rides currently common in the area.

The population in South Florida has surged in recent years, largely driven by international migration. This trend has made Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties among the fastest-growing regions in the United States. Florida’s overall population increased by more than 8% between 2020 and 2023, further intensifying the need for innovative transportation solutions.

Addressing Traffic Challenges

The rapid population growth has led to persistent traffic congestion, particularly between Miami and Palm Beach. Major highways like I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike experience peak daily volumes exceeding 200,000 vehicles, resulting in significant delays. In Miami-Dade County, peak-hour travel times can more than double due to heavy commuter flows, creating an urgent need for alternatives.

Ross articulated the importance of addressing congestion, stating, “As areas become more popular, there’s more congestion, and the more there’s more congestion … the more the need for this type of transportation. The value of people’s time, that’s what it’s really all about.”

Archer Aviation has already conducted successful test flights in San Jose, California, and is also planning to expand its air taxi networks to cities like Abu Dhabi, New York City, and Los Angeles. With the backing of Ross and the growing demand for efficient travel options, Archer’s flying taxi service may soon become a viable solution for residents and commuters in South Florida.
