HBO Max Expands with New Harry Potter Series and Renewed Furia

HBO Max, the streaming service under Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), is making significant strides in its international presence and original content development. At an event in London, the head of originals, Sarah Aubrey, announced the much-anticipated Harry Potter series and the renewal of the Spanish original series, Furia.

Aubrey highlighted the importance of expanding HBO Max’s programming slate, emphasizing the need for increased development funding since her appointment nearly a year ago. “We have this great show Furia, which I relate to because it’s about women’s rage,” she remarked, noting the series’ engaging visuals and humor. The second season of Furia is set to premiere in 2026, featuring a mix of new and returning cast members.

The announcement came shortly after HBO Max revealed plans for its European market launch on January 13, 2026, targeting countries including Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. The service will also debut in the United Kingdom and Ireland, marking a significant milestone in its European expansion efforts.

Currently, HBO Max is available in key markets such as Germany, Italy, and the UK through an exclusive partnership with Comcast’s Sky. Popular shows like The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver have garnered substantial viewership, contributing to a reported total of 128 million streaming subscribers for WBD in the third quarter of 2025.

Reflecting on her career at the company, Aubrey noted the challenges posed by multiple mergers and strategic shifts, underscoring a key lesson learned: “If you rush something at the development stage, it often ends in heartbreak.” This philosophy informs HBO Max’s approach as it prepares for the upcoming European launches and a slate of new original series, including a documentary about actress Gina Lollobrigida in Italy and an original series from the team behind the German hit Dark.

Aubrey also addressed the potential for international talent within HBO Max, sharing her excitement about a teaser for the newly announced German original, 4 Blocks Zero, a prequel to the acclaimed gangster drama.

When asked about future projects in Australia, Aubrey indicated that developments are underway but emphasized it is too early to provide specific details. She expressed similar sentiments regarding the possibility of producing microdramas, stating her focus is currently on the much-anticipated Harry Potter series and other high-profile projects.

As her visit to the Harry Potter series set approached, Aubrey expressed enthusiasm about the adaptation, stating, “It’s such a delightful adaptation of the books. It’s created by a British writer. It’s directed by a British filmmaker. These people are the best that this country has to offer. And I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”

With these developments, HBO Max is poised for a pivotal year ahead, expanding its international footprint while strengthening its original content offerings.
