Medina Seeks $100,000 Grant for Urgent South Elmwood Parking Revamp

URGENT UPDATE: Medina City Council has just approved a resolution to seek $100,000 in funding for the much-needed improvement of the South Elmwood parking lot. This decision comes after the city learned that the project was not eligible for a building demolition site revitalization grant.

Officials are pivoting to apply for a brownfield redevelopment grant through the Ohio Department of Development. “This is something we discussed in Finance Committee two weeks ago,” said Economic Development Director Kimberly Marshall. “The state determined our project isn’t eligible because there isn’t an existing structure on the parking lot.”

Applications for the brownfield grant are due on December 5, 2025, and Marshall is optimistic about their chances. She believes the project qualifies for the full $100,000 in funding, which is critical for addressing pressing drainage issues and enhancing the area with better lighting and landscaping. The total estimated cost for the renovation is around $400,000, a significant investment for the city.

In a collaborative effort, hotel officials have expressed their willingness to cover up to 50 percent of the renovation costs. Under this agreement, the parking lot will serve as public parking while also accommodating hotel guests when their own parking facilities are full.

This project is vital for enhancing local infrastructure and improving accessibility for both residents and visitors, making it a top priority for city officials. The urgency of these developments cannot be understated, as the funding deadline approaches and the need for improved parking is felt across the community.
