The Boston Red Sox are actively exploring trade opportunities to improve their roster following a disappointing exit from the postseason. After being eliminated by the New York Yankees in the wild-card series, the team acknowledged the need for additional talent, particularly in their rotation. On November 25, the Red Sox acquired pitcher Sonny Gray and cash from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a pair of pitchers and a player to be named later. While Gray adds experience at the age of 36, the Red Sox are aware that more reinforcements are necessary to enhance their competitive edge.
Boston’s future remains bright, bolstered by the emergence of former No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony, who made his debut this season and demonstrated the skills that earned him a top ranking. Nevertheless, the young roster, which includes Anthony, requires experienced players to guide them. The team parted ways with franchise icon Rafael Devers in June and has yet to adequately replace his offensive production. A proven bat is essential for the Red Sox as they aim to improve on their third-place finish in the American League East in 2025.
While outfielders Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu have been frequently mentioned in trade discussions, the Red Sox may also consider moving three additional players who could attract interest from other teams.
Ceddanne Rafaela: Defensive Asset
Center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela is a player to watch for teams looking to strengthen their outfield defense. The 25-year-old earned his first Gold Glove Award in 2025, showcasing his defensive prowess. Over 156 games, he posted a batting line of .249/.295/.414, contributing 16 home runs and 63 runs batted in (RBI). Although his RBI total decreased from 2024, he improved his on-base percentage to .274 and reduced his strikeouts from 151 to 117. Since making his debut in August 2023, Rafaela has played not only center field but also shortstop and second base, making him an attractive option for contending teams seeking versatility in their lineup.
Marcelo Mayer: High-Ceiling Infielder
Another player on the Red Sox’s potential trade list is infielder Marcelo Mayer. Drafted fourth overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, the 22-year-old faced numerous injuries during his minor league career. Despite these setbacks, Mayer made his debut in May and batted .228 with a .674 on-base plus slugging (OPS), recording 13 extra-base hits and 10 RBI. Unfortunately, a right wrist sprain sidelined him for the remainder of the season after July. With only 136 major-league plate appearances across 44 games, Mayer still holds significant potential, especially as he approaches his 23rd birthday on December 12.
Brayan Bello: Promising Right-Hander
With Gray’s arrival, 26-year-old right-hander Brayan Bello may find himself at risk of being the odd man out in the Red Sox’s pitching staff. Bello had a breakout season in 2025, achieving a 3.35 ERA over 166.2 innings, along with 124 strikeouts. He also accomplished the milestone of throwing his first career complete game in July against the Colorado Rockies. Despite a history of injuries affecting his throwing arm, Bello’s upside remains high. If the Red Sox can trade him to acquire a reliable bat, it is a move they should seriously consider.
As the offseason progresses, the Boston Red Sox continue to evaluate their roster and potential trade chips. The team’s focus will be on acquiring the necessary talent to compete more effectively in the upcoming season, ensuring they build on their current foundation while addressing their pressing needs.
