Mike Berney Retires After Leading Palouse River Counseling for 30 Years

After over three decades of dedicated service, Mike Berney, the Executive Director of Palouse River Counseling, will retire in December 2023. Under his leadership, the organization has significantly evolved, providing essential behavioral health services to the community in Whitman County, Washington. The nonprofit has appointed Clinical Director Kathleen Stewardson as his successor following a comprehensive national search.

Berney’s journey began in the 1990s when he took the helm of what was then known as Whitman County Mental Health. He had recently earned his Master’s in Business Administration from Washington State University. In 2003, the clinic transitioned to a private not-for-profit entity, allowing for enhanced service delivery independent of county administration. Berney remarked on how this shift marked a substantial transformation, stating, “It’s almost a ‘night and day difference’” compared to the clinic’s earlier days.

Under Berney’s guidance, Palouse River Counseling has expanded from a modest staff of around 20 to over 40 professionals, including psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists. The organization now offers a wide range of outpatient services, such as individual therapy, crisis intervention, and substance abuse treatment. Berney highlighted the center’s most significant achievement as its increased capability to serve individuals in need of mental health care.

The cultural landscape surrounding behavioral health has shifted positively during Berney’s tenure. While some stigma remains, he noted that people are increasingly comfortable acknowledging their need for counseling services. The term “mental health” has gained traction, fostering a broader acceptance of behavioral health as a vital component of overall health.

In addition to public awareness, Berney emphasized the importance of collaboration between Palouse River Counseling, primary care providers, and local law enforcement. These partnerships aim to create a more effective response for individuals requiring assistance.

Looking ahead, Berney expressed optimism for the future of mental health services in the region. He stated, “We’ve got a great group of people that work here. I believe that the new executive director will carry on and make behavioral health services even more available to the residents of Pullman and Whitman County.”

As Berney transitions from his role, the Palouse River Counseling community prepares to continue its mission of supporting individuals and families in need of behavioral health care. The leadership change marks a new chapter for the organization, as it strives to enhance its services and maintain its commitment to the community.
