Kim Mulkey Applauds MiLaysia Fulwiley’s Strong Start with LSU

The LSU women’s basketball team has kicked off their 2025-26 season with a flawless 3-0 record, largely thanks to the contributions of MiLaysia Fulwiley. The talented point guard, who previously played for the national champion South Carolina Gamecocks, has quickly adapted to her new role on the Tigers, transitioning from a bench player to a starter.

Fulwiley, who was named the 2025 SEC Sixth Player of the Year while at South Carolina, has impressed head coach Kim Mulkey with her defensive skills. Prior to the season, Mulkey acknowledged her awareness of Fulwiley’s capabilities, having seen her perform against LSU previously. “I’m going to challenge her to learn the point guard position,” Mulkey stated, highlighting Fulwiley’s potential.

Fulwiley’s Impressive Stats and Performance

In the early stages of the season, Fulwiley has averaged an impressive 15.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.3 steals per game while shooting an effective 57.1% from the field. Following LSU’s dominant 115-25 victory over SE Louisiana, Mulkey praised her guard’s quick hands, saying, “I wouldn’t want MiLaysia to guard me. Her hands are so quick.”

Fulwiley’s defensive prowess has been a significant asset, as she currently leads the team with an average of 4.3 steals per game. Her ability to disrupt opposing offenses has become a cornerstone of LSU’s early success. Reflecting on her transition, Fulwiley expressed confidence in her new environment: “There weren’t any butterflies. I think I just wanted to win, honestly.”

Upcoming Challenges and Games

As LSU continues its non-conference schedule, the team has faced relatively unchallenging opponents, securing decisive victories against Houston Christian (43-point win), Southeast Louisiana (89-point win), and Georgia Southern (48-point win). The Tigers’ next test will come on November 12, 2025, when they compete against Charlotte.

Looking ahead, the competition will intensify significantly in December, with a road matchup against No. 7 Duke. LSU will also face off against No. 4 Texas twice in January. A highly anticipated matchup against Fulwiley’s former team, No. 2 South Carolina, is scheduled for February 14, 2026, a game that promises to be filled with excitement and rivalry.

With a strong start to the season and a roster bolstered by talented transfers like Fulwiley, LSU aims to maintain its momentum and build towards a successful campaign. Coach Mulkey’s challenge to her players is clear: continue to improve and prepare for the tougher battles that lie ahead.
