Detroit Lakes Lakers Secure Fifth Place at Section 5A True Team Meet

The Detroit Lakes boys swim and dive team showcased a commendable performance at the Section 5A True Team Meet held on January 18, 2024, at the University of Minnesota Morris. The Lakers finished in fifth place overall, accumulating a total of 574 team points. Several athletes delivered impressive individual results, highlighting the team’s competitive spirit.

In the relay events, the Lakers secured sixth place in the 200-yard medley relay, completing the race in 1:55.13. The relay team consisted of Benjamin Mathiason, Zac Westholter, Alex Mack, and Henry Mathiason. This performance set a positive tone for the team as they continued to compete in individual events.

Benjamin Mathiason excelled in the 200-yard individual medley, recording the second-fastest time of 2:09.65. Additionally, Henry Mathiason showcased his speed by finishing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.56. On the diving board, Lucas Lundberg made a notable impact, finishing third with a score of 342.00, while his teammate Kade Muff placed seventh, scoring 250.45.

The competition continued to be fierce as the Lakers competed in the 100-yard butterfly, where Mack finished fifth with a time of 1:04.11. Henry Mathiason also made his mark in the 100-yard freestyle, placing eighth with a time of 54.83. The 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Mack, Benjamin, Andrew Barberg, and Henry, finished in fifth place with a time of 1:39.97.

Benjamin Mathiason capped off the day with an outstanding performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, where he claimed first place with a time of 1:05.02, solidifying his status as one of the meet’s standout performers. Alex Mack also participated in this event, finishing ninth with a time of 1:12.38.

The Lakers will look to build on this experience as they prepare for their next meet in Fergus Falls on January 20, 2024. The team’s overall performance at the Section 5A True Team Meet reflects their dedication and potential as they move further into the season.

In team standings, Sartell dominated the meet with 1231 points, followed by Melrose-Sauk Centre with 1115 points, and Fergus Falls with 981 points. The complete standings showcased the competitive nature of the event, with the Lakers finishing ahead of Sauk Rapids-Rice and Morris Area Chokio-Alberta.
