Community Mourns the Loss of Gary E. Kinnett at 91

Gary E. Kinnett, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 2, 2025, at the age of 91. His family and community remember him as a dedicated individual who made significant contributions throughout his life.

Born in Los Angeles on June 24, 1934, to Donald Eugene and Florence Margaret (Taylor) Kinnett, Gary exhibited a passion for both education and service from an early age. He graduated from University High School and went on to obtain a degree from Occidental College, where he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Following his graduation, Gary joined the United States Navy and completed Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He served on active duty for three and a half years before transitioning to the Reserves, ultimately retiring at the rank of Captain after 27 years of service.

A Life of Service and Achievement

Following his military service, Gary pursued a legal education at Boalt Hall Law School at UC Berkeley, where he joined the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He married Shirley Ann Campbell from Seattle, Washington, on December 21, 1959. After completing law school, the couple moved to Southern California, where Gary began his legal career with the California State Compensation Insurance Fund before joining the prestigious law firm of Parker, Stanbury, McGee, Peckham, Babcock, and Combs. He quickly became a partner, demonstrating his skill and dedication to the legal profession.

Gary was also a member of various trial lawyer associations, which allowed him to travel extensively. He and Shirley enjoyed numerous skiing trips, combined vacations with Navy duties, and family holidays that included their children, Julie and David, and later their grandchildren.

Community Engagement and Legacy

A devoted member of the local community, Gary was actively involved in St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Stephens Minister. His leadership extended to the Seaview Residents’ Association, and he held various roles in organizations such as the Elks Lodge of San Pedro and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Additionally, he was a member of the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club and the Portuguese Bend Beach Club, where he fostered connections with fellow community members.

Gary is survived by his wife, Shirley, their two children, Julie and David (along with David’s wife, Jennie, and their children, Tanner and Tristan), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dear friend and brother-in-law, Robert Campbell, just weeks before his passing.

A Celebration of Life service will take place at 10:00 A.M. on December 19, 2025, at St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, located at 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Family and friends are invited to honor Gary’s remarkable life and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
