The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on October 24, 2023, that it will monitor polling sites in select counties in California and New Jersey during the upcoming elections on November 4. This initiative aims to enhance transparency in the electoral process.
Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the importance of transparency, stating, “Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity.” The DOJ plans to allocate necessary resources to ensure that the elections are fair and transparent, reflecting the rights of the American electorate.
The monitoring will take place in several counties in California, including Kern, Riverside, Fresno, Orange, and Los Angeles. Additionally, polling sites in Passaic County, New Jersey, will also be subject to scrutiny. While monitoring elections is a standard procedure, the focus on these two states, known for their Democratic leanings, has drawn attention.
The effort will be led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, who outlined the DOJ’s commitment to safeguarding democracy. “The Department of Justice will do everything necessary to protect the votes of eligible American citizens, ensuring our elections are safe and secure,” Dhillon stated. She further noted that transparent processes and effective monitoring are essential for maintaining public trust in the electoral system.
Personnel from the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division will be present to address questions and complaints from the public regarding potential violations of federal voting rights laws. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that voters can participate in a secure and fair electoral environment.
As the elections approach, the monitoring by the DOJ serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in the United States.
