Richard Allen Forward: Celebrating a Life of Service and Love

Richard Allen Forward, a beloved husband, father, and community member, passed away on September 15, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on February 1, 1936, in Red Bluff, California, he was the son of Alva and Berenice Forward and grew up in a close-knit family with five siblings.
Richard’s early education began in a one-room schoolhouse at Forward’s Mill, also known as Rockland School. He continued his studies at Lincoln Street Elementary and was part of the inaugural class at Bidwell Elementary School in 1948-49. He graduated from Red Bluff Union High School before pursuing higher education at Shasta Junior College and Chico State University.
A dedicated worker, Richard built a diverse career spanning multiple industries. In 1957, he founded Merchants Janitorial Service, which he operated for a decade while also working in the lumber industry with Forward Brothers Lumber Company, U.S. Plywood, and Commander Industries in both Red Bluff and Texarkana, Texas. His career took a significant turn when he entered the insurance field, initially with the California Farm Bureau. He later established the Richard Forward Insurance Agency, which he successfully managed from 1984 until his retirement in 1991.
Retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter in Richard’s life filled with travel and leisure. He spent quality time with his wife, Ann Forward, whom he described as his best friend and confidant. Together, they raised five daughters and explored the country in their RV, visiting new places and enjoying peaceful days at their cherished cabin in Manton.
Richard’s life was characterized by a deep commitment to family, laughter, and adventure. He and Ann created countless memories together, whether playing golf in scenic destinations, dancing, or sharing quiet moments watching sunsets. Their partnership was built on loyalty and affection, a testament to their enduring love.
Richard is survived by his wife, Ann, and their daughters: Berenice Forward, Christy Forward (Bill Galbraith), Kelly Forward, Jill Etzler (Matt), and Jennifer Skinner (Patrick). He also leaves behind a legacy of 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, along with many close friends who will remember him fondly.
He will be celebrated for his unwavering dedication to family, his strong character, and his ability to make those around him feel appreciated. Richard’s life was one of purpose, filled with joy and meaningful connections.
A Celebration of Life will take place on November 13, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Red Bluff. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather to honor and remember Richard Forward’s remarkable life.
Those wishing to pay tribute to Richard’s memory may consider contributing to the Kelly-Griggs House Museum at PO Box 9082, Red Bluff, CA 96080, or Manton Parks at PO Box 551, Manton, CA 96059.
