Zelensky Declares Peace Deal ‘90% Ready’ Amid New Year Assault

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for peace in his nation during his New Year’s address, stating that a proposed peace deal is “90% ready.” His remarks come as Russia marked the arrival of the new year by launching over 200 drones towards Ukraine, resulting in civilian casualties and significant destruction.

Zelensky, who had met with Donald Trump on December 31, 2025, to discuss ongoing peace negotiations, conveyed his sorrow that the conflict persisted into the new year. “I would give anything in the world if, in this address, I could say that peace will also come in just a few minutes,” he stated, acknowledging the ongoing struggles faced by Ukrainians. He noted that while he cannot declare an end to hostilities, he believes Ukraine is making every effort toward achieving peace.

During his speech, Zelensky highlighted that key issues remain regarding Russia’s demands, which he described as maximalist. “Those are the 10% that will determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe, how people will live,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of unity and determination in achieving a comprehensive peace agreement.

In the context of these negotiations, Zelensky indicated that he had recently concluded a call with Steve Witkoff, special envoy for peace under President Trump. Witkoff later posted on X, outlining their focus on practical measures to advance the peace discussions, including enhancing security guarantees and developing mechanisms to prevent future conflicts.

While Ukraine’s leadership attempts to navigate the complexities of peace talks, the Russian military conducted a drone assault that resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to reports from Kyiv’s military. Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted 176 drones, although 24 strikes impacted 15 locations across the country.

In conjunction with the drone attacks, Russian officials reiterated claims that Ukraine had attempted to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin during a December drone strike. Ukraine has firmly denied these allegations, and multiple reports indicate that the CIA has also determined the claims to be false.

Zelensky’s New Year address and the ongoing military actions highlight the persistent tensions in the region as Ukraine strives for peace amidst a backdrop of violence and loss. As the situation evolves, the international community continues to monitor the developments closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring lasting stability to the war-torn nation.
