Viral Falsehood: Misattributed Quote from Israeli Prisoner Exposed

A misleading statement attributed to an Israeli prisoner has circulated widely on social media, prompting a thorough fact-check. The quote, allegedly made by an individual named Alexander Turbanov, surfaced on February 15, 2025, and gained renewed attention in October 2025. Investigations confirm that this information is false; the prisoner’s actual name is Alexander Troufanov.

The disputed quote was initially shared by social media influencer Khaled Safi on X, claiming it reflected Troufanov’s sentiments after his release. In a follow-up post, Safi clarified that he had composed the words “on his behalf.” The fabricated statement, which appeared in a Facebook post by the page Towards Understanding Islam, begins with a sensational declaration: “Your kindness has been engraved in my conscience forever.”

This claim misidentifies the released hostage. A photograph of the exchange ceremony, published in an article by US News & World Report, identifies Troufanov alongside two other hostages. The image, captured during their handover in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, shows Troufanov, 29, wearing a red hoodie. The caption notes that he was escorted by fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad as they were handed over to the Red Cross.

On the day of his release, February 15, 2025, Khaled Safi posted an 8-second video clip on X, showing Troufanov in the same context as the photograph. Although the auto-translation from Arabic to English varies slightly, the essence of the message remains consistent with the fabricated quote. The content suggests a deep gratitude towards his captors, stating, “You cared for me like a compassionate father cares for his children, preserving my health, dignity, and elegance.”

As the post gained traction, many social media users sought clarification regarding the authenticity of the quote. Safi addressed these inquiries later that day, emphasizing, “These are not the words of the captive, but rather I wrote them on his behalf, describing his condition, his gratitude, his thanks, and his bowing to the men of the resistance.”

The spread of misinformation surrounding Troufanov’s release highlights the challenges of verifying claims in the digital age. With social media platforms facilitating the rapid dissemination of unverified content, the need for critical examination of information becomes increasingly vital.

As of now, there is no verified statement from Alexander Troufanov that aligns with the quote circulating online. The focus remains on ensuring accurate reporting and responsible sharing of information, especially concerning sensitive topics such as hostage situations and the ongoing conflict in the region.
