In a significant escalation of military action, US forces have deployed low-cost, Iranian-inspired kamikaze drones against Iran during Operation Epic Fury. This marks the first time such drones, known as the Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS), have been used in combat. The drones targeted various military sites, including command hubs and air defense systems belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the LUCAS drones were launched to strike multiple key locations across Iran, including missile launch sites and military airfields. The operation represents a tactical shift, with CENTCOM stating, “Task Force Scorpion Strike – for the first time in history – is using one-way attack drones in combat during Operation Epic Fury.”
Details of the Drone Deployment
The LUCAS drones are modeled after Iran’s Shahed-136 drones but are designed to be lighter and more versatile. Built by SpektreWorks in Arizona, each drone costs approximately $35,000 and can be launched via catapult or rocket-assisted takeoff. The first successful deployment occurred during a drill with the USS Santa Barbara in the Arabian Gulf last December.
In a statement on X, CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper remarked, “The President ordered bold action, and our brave Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen are answering the call.” This deployment comes amid heightened tensions in the region, following a series of airstrikes that resulted in significant Iranian casualties.
Consequences of Military Actions
On the morning of the drone deployment, US and Israeli forces launched airstrikes that reportedly killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. President Trump confirmed the death, labeling it as “justice” for those affected by Khamenei’s regime. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Khamenei, one of the most evil people in history, is dead.” He added that this was not only justice for the people of Iran but for many around the world who suffered under his leadership.
The airstrikes also resulted in the deaths of approximately 40 top Iranian officials, including leaders of the IRGC. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles and drones targeting US military bases and facilities across several Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Jordan, alongside attacks on Israeli sites.
As the situation continues to unfold, officials from both the US and Israel have indicated that the military campaign in Iran could extend for weeks, signaling a prolonged period of conflict in the region. The international community watches closely as the ramifications of these actions develop.
