US Coast Guard Surpasses Recruitment Goals for Second Year

The U.S. Coast Guard has successfully surpassed its recruitment goals for the second consecutive year, bringing in a total of 5,204 new active-duty enlisted personnel in fiscal 2025. This achievement marks the highest number of recruits since 1991, far exceeding the target of 4,300 set by the service. The impressive figures reflect a growing interest among Americans in serving with the Coast Guard.

Adm. Kevin Lunday, acting commandant of the Coast Guard, stated, “More Americans want to serve in the Coast Guard than ever before. We aren’t just growing – we are bringing in the best talent from across the United States and building the workforce of the future.” This sentiment underscores the organization’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities through talent acquisition.

Record Recruitment and Officer Commissioning

In addition to the enlistment figures, the Coast Guard commissioned 371 new officers in fiscal 2025, achieving the highest officer target recorded in its history. The service also successfully recruited 777 reservists, surpassing its goal of 750. This accomplishment marks the third consecutive year that the Coast Guard has met its reserve recruitment objectives.

To support this recruitment surge, the Coast Guard opened seven new recruiting offices in key locations, including Miami, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Long Island, Austin, Grand Rapids, and Davenport. These offices aim to enhance accessibility and outreach to potential candidates across the country.

Strategic Initiatives for Future Growth

The Coast Guard is currently undergoing significant transformation under Force Design 2028, a strategic plan introduced by Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, in May 2023. This initiative aims to develop a stronger, more capable fighting force.

An executive report released by the Coast Guard outlines plans to establish the first Coast Guard service secretary, reform contracting and acquisition processes, leverage emerging technologies, and eliminate outdated programs. Notably, the report highlights an ambitious goal to increase the military workforce by an additional 15,000 personnel by fiscal 2028.

These initiatives reflect the Coast Guard’s proactive approach to recruitment and organizational development, ensuring that it remains well-prepared to meet the challenges of modern maritime security. As the service continues to attract new talent, it positions itself for greater effectiveness and readiness in the years to come.
