Thailand and Cambodia have resumed discussions aimed at establishing a durable ceasefire in their ongoing border conflict, which has escalated since early December. The talks commenced on Wednesday at a border checkpoint in Chanthaburi Province, eastern Thailand. Senior military officers from both nations met for a brief 35-minute session, signaling a significant step towards halting hostilities that have plagued the region for over two weeks.

A spokesman for the Thai Defence Ministry indicated that the outcome of the ongoing discussions among a joint committee focused on border issues would influence the ministerial meeting’s potential success. The Cambodian Defence Ministry’s representative noted that the upcoming ministerial discussions are crucial for finding solutions to restore stability in the border area. The AKP news agency reported that both nations are committed to resolving their differences through dialogue.

The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, which spans approximately 800 kilometers, has its roots in a long-standing dispute over territorial claims.
