Following an attack on Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip, Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, has called for the resumption of military operations against Hamas. In a post on X, Ben-Gvir urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to direct the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to “fully and with full force resume combat operations in the Gaza Strip.” He expressed concerns over what he described as a “deceptive notion” that Hamas would alter its stance or adhere to agreements made, labeling the group a “Nazi terrorist organization” that must be eradicated.

The incident that triggered Ben-Gvir’s comments involved reported attacks by Hamas on Israeli troops stationed in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military characterized these actions as a “gross violation of the ceasefire,” though the specifics of the confrontation were initially unclear. An Israeli military official indicated that the troops were targeted with a rocket-propelled grenade, and a Palestinian sniper also reportedly fired at an Israeli unit.

In response to these developments, the Israeli Air Force carried out strikes against targets in Rafah. This escalation comes despite an official ceasefire that has been in place since October 10, which was intended to curb hostilities between Israel and Hamas. Nevertheless, there have been multiple violent incidents since the ceasefire was enacted.

Ben-Gvir has consistently criticized the ceasefire agreement, opposing it from its inception and voting against its implementation. His latest comments reflect a growing frustration among some Israeli officials regarding the ongoing tensions and the perceived inadequacy of the ceasefire in ensuring security.

As the situation evolves, the potential for renewed military operations raises significant concerns about the humanitarian impact in the region and the prospects for long-term peace. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, seeking a resolution that addresses the underlying issues fueling the conflict.
