Donations for Bondi Hero Ahmed Al Ahmed Exceed $2.5 Million

More than $2.5 million has been raised for Ahmed Al Ahmed, the bystander who heroically intervened during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 3, 2023. The crowdfunding campaign has attracted nearly 43,000 individual donations, including a significant contribution of $99,999 from American billionaire Bill Ackman.

The campaign was launched to acknowledge Al Ahmed’s courageous actions as he wrestled a firearm from one of the attackers. The GoFundMe page describes him as a figure of “selfless courage,” highlighting that he was shot twice while attempting to protect others during the chaos. Al Ahmed is currently recovering in hospital and has been recognized as a national hero for his bravery.

As the fundraising efforts continue, total donations for the victims of the Bondi shooting and their families have reached nearly $5 million. Among the beneficiaries is the family of Matilda, a 10-year-old victim, who has received close to $780,000. Fundraisers have also been established for Sofia and Boris Gurman, who tragically lost their lives while trying to prevent the attack, raising $650,000 in their memory.

Community Response and Support for Victims

The community response has been overwhelming, with significant support directed towards the families affected by this tragedy. More than $360,000 has been raised for the family of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, another victim of the shooting. The fundraising efforts reflect a widespread desire to help those impacted by the violence, which left 15 people dead and over 41 injured, including two officers from the New South Wales Police.

Constable Scott Dyson, aged 24, suffered severe injuries to his shoulder, while probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, aged 22, lost his left eye in the incident. Donations for Hibbert have reached nearly $36,000 as the community rallies around those affected.

Leaders Acknowledge Al Ahmed’s Heroism

The heroism displayed by Al Ahmed has not gone unnoticed by officials. NSW Premier Chris Minns met with him during his recovery, expressing gratitude for his actions on social media. “Ahmed is a real-life hero,” Minns stated. “His incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives when he disarmed a terrorist at enormous personal risk.”

Federal Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also visited Al Ahmed, describing him as a “true Australian hero.” Albanese emphasized that Al Ahmed acted instinctively during a moment of crisis, and his response serves as an inspiration to all Australians.

In recognition of his bravery, Al Ahmed is expected to receive an award from Governor-General Sam Mostyn, who noted the significance of his actions. Mostyn revealed that she has communicated with King Charles, who requested to extend his thanks to Al Ahmed for his courageous deeds.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Al Ahmed thanked everyone for their support in a message conveyed through a translator. He expressed his hopes for a quick recovery and reassured the community that he did not regret his actions during the attack.

Despite his serious injuries, Al Ahmed’s attorney, Sam Issa, reported that he remains humble and focused on the gratitude he feels for being in Australia. Issa indicated that Al Ahmed sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including significant damage to his left arm, and emphasized the toll these injuries have taken on him.

As the community continues to support Al Ahmed and the victims, the outpouring of donations reflects a collective commitment to healing and remembrance in the wake of this tragic event.
