UPDATE: A new affordable apartment complex has just opened in Ybor City, offering immediate housing solutions for local families. Unveiled on July 10, 2023, the Casa Maceo Apartments features 10 units specifically designed for those earning 80% of the area’s median income or less.
Developers Dontavious Pittman, Kevin Johnson, and Ponce McNeal partnered with the City of Tampa to transform a vacant lot into this essential housing project. The initiative received a significant boost with a $3 million grant from a state affordable housing program.
Mayor Jane Castor expressed her pride in the project, stating,
“I could not be prouder of what Shacres Development has accomplished here in Ybor City. This development is more than just new housing — it’s a testament to what happens when local visionaries invest in their own community.”
The complex, located on Columbus Drive, will include six units priced for residents earning 50% of the area median income and four units for those at 80% AMI. For context, a family of four would need to earn about $83,000 to qualify for the higher tier.
This project marks a pivotal moment for Ybor City, as it addresses the pressing need for affordable housing in the region. The apartments are expected to provide a welcoming home for many families who have struggled to find affordable living options in the rapidly changing Tampa landscape.
As the housing crisis continues to impact communities, initiatives like Casa Maceo serve as a beacon of hope. Residents and local leaders are encouraged to support such developments to foster a thriving, inclusive community.
With the opening of Casa Maceo Apartments, the City of Tampa demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The ongoing efforts to provide affordable housing options are crucial for ensuring that Tampa remains a vibrant and accessible city for all its citizens.
