BREAKING: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has just filed a permit for a staggering $659 million expansion at its Memphis supercomputer site. This development, reported by Data Center Dynamics, marks a significant step in xAI’s rapid growth and technological advancement.

Since then, xAI has rapidly scaled its operations, acquiring additional land for the Colossus 2 facility, which became operational in January 2025. A third data center is also in the pipeline for the cluster, which straddles the Tennessee-Mississippi border.
The implications of this expansion are enormous. Musk has stated that the broader Memphis campus could eventually harness around 2 gigawatts of computing power. Furthermore, Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, revealed during a White House event that xAI plans to develop 1.2 gigawatts of power for its supercomputer facility. This commitment is part of the administration’s “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” aimed at bolstering energy stability in the region.
“We will build new substations and invest in electrical infrastructure to provide stability to the area’s grid,” Shotwell announced. “This installation will provide enough backup power to power the city of Memphis, along with ample energy for Southaven, Mississippi.”
In addition to energy concerns, Shotwell emphasized xAI’s dedication to environmental sustainability and local employment. The company plans to construct state-of-the-art water recycling plants, aiming to preserve approximately 4.7 billion gallons of water from the Memphis aquifer each year. This initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs for American workers across both sides of the Tennessee-Mississippi border.
