Winter Weather Advisory: Up to 5 Inches of Snow Hits Suffolk

URGENT UPDATE: A winter weather advisory is now in effect for Suffolk County, with up to 5 inches of snow expected. The National Weather Service issued the advisory at 2:27 a.m. on October 28, 2023, advising residents to prepare for hazardous road conditions starting at 10 p.m. tonight and lasting until 1 p.m. on October 29.

As winter weather bears down, authorities are warning that “total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches” could create dangerously slick roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Motorists are urged to “slow down and use caution while traveling.”

Driving conditions can rapidly deteriorate, leading to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries each year. With temperatures near freezing, it’s crucial to assume icy conditions may exist on roads. If you must drive, prioritize safety by selecting routes with fewer trees and power lines, and always be on the lookout for potential falling hazards.

If you find yourself stranded, remain calm and notify someone of your situation. Use a cloth to signal for help and make your vehicle visible by turning on the dome light and flashers.

Before heading out, check the latest road conditions and equip your vehicle with essential supplies: a full gas tank, windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blankets, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
