Willmar’s Brynn Streff Makes History, Qualifies for State Meet

BREAKING: Willmar’s Brynn Streff has made history as the first female wrestler from her school to qualify for the state tournament. This groundbreaking achievement comes after a fierce performance at the Section 8 championships held on Saturday.

Streff, a freshman, secured her spot in the girls’ state tournament by finishing as the runner-up in the 100-pound bracket. After a hard-fought battle against Natalee Friedrichs of Sauk Centre/Melrose in the semifinal, Streff bounced back to defeat Lillian Lane of Thief River Falls, setting the stage for a crucial third-place match.

In an impressive display, Streff clinched third place with a dominating 14-3 major decision over Anilyse Bundy from Brainerd. This victory allowed her another shot at the state meet through a true second-place match, which she won decisively with a 6-0 decision against Sartell’s Brooklyn Smith. The girls’ state tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.

Alongside Streff, fellow competitor Maria Perez nearly secured her own state berth in the 118-pound weight class. After a loss in her opening match against Sartell’s Abigail Swenson, Perez rallied to win her next four matches, including a significant victory in the third-place match against Brooklyn Budeau from Sauk Centre/Melrose. However, Perez fell short in a rematch against Swenson for true second place.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. Other notable results from the Section 8 championships include:

Monica Mogollon (106 lbs): 0-2, eliminated
Nadia Lopez-Berg (112 lbs): 1-3, sixth place
Lisa Resendiz (124 lbs): 3-1, fifth place

Infinity Vega (170 lbs): 0-2, eliminated
Bella Gassler (190 lbs): 0-2, eliminated

In neighboring Section 5, Elizabeth Rademacher from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa also made headlines, finishing first at 130 lbs with a perfect 3-0 record. She secured her championship by pinning St. Michael-Albertville’s Morgan Mielke at 2:41 of the match.

Ava Kiecker from BOLD dominated at 124 lbs, also finishing first, while Brooklyn Binsfeld from Paynesville took second at 100 lbs.
