URGENT UPDATE: Washington Township is revitalizing the historic Thorington Schoolhouse, a nearly 200-year-old landmark, marking a significant transformation for the community. Under the leadership of Supervisor Sam Previti, the schoolhouse has been relocated to a newly designated five-acre plot, set to become the focal point of the upcoming Thorington Park.
The relocation of the Thorington Schoolhouse, previously left in neglect at the intersection of Mound and 31 Mile roads, was approved by a majority vote from the Board of Trustees. The township invested $125,000 in this crucial preservation effort, as reported by WWJ Newsradio. The park, expected to feature modern amenities like a play structure, pavilion, and pickleball courts, will also include a community apple orchard, thanks to generous donations from local orchardists.
The intricate operation to move the historic structure was highlighted by C & A Building Movers owner Fred Christian, emphasizing the challenges faced during the relocation. Videos capturing the careful disconnection of utilities and the hoisting of the 1840s schoolhouse onto a semi-truck showcase the meticulous planning involved.
In a unique educational angle, Romeo High School students are actively participating in the restoration process, gaining hands-on experience in historical preservation. Earlier discoveries within the schoolhouse included artifacts such as a fourth-grade test from the 1930s. Students are now planning to restore the school’s windows using period-specific wavy glass, adding to the historical authenticity of the project.
WHAT’S NEXT: As work progresses, the Thorington Park project is expected to foster community engagement and pride, as residents look forward to its opening. The revitalization of the Thorington Schoolhouse not only preserves a piece of local history but also enriches the educational experience for students involved in the restoration efforts.
Stay tuned for more updates on this significant community project as it unfolds. The Thorington Park initiative represents a commitment to honoring the past while enhancing the future for Washington Township residents.
