UPDATE: Volkswagen has just announced the launch of its highly anticipated T-Roc R, a compact crossover that combines sporty performance with SUV practicality. This exciting model is set to redefine the segment as customer deliveries begin this month.
The T-Roc has made waves in the automotive market, ranking as Europe’s fourth best-selling model through October 2023, with an impressive total of 170,931 units sold this year alone. This remarkable achievement comes from the first-generation model, which has been on the market for eight years.
As Volkswagen gears up for this launch, the buzz surrounding the T-Roc R intensifies. Although the high-performance version won’t hit the streets until 2027, its design is already cloaked in camouflage, hinting at what’s to come. The vehicle features an aggressive Akrapovič quad-exhaust system and striking 20-inch forged wheels fitted with wider tires, enhancing grip and performance.
Insider images from Autocritica reveal a more aggressive aesthetic, showcasing angrier bumpers and beefier brakes. However, the true excitement lies under the hood. The T-Roc R is expected to share the powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with the latest Golf R, delivering 328 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. In a move towards sustainability, this model will also incorporate a mild-hybrid setup designed to enhance efficiency while adhering to the upcoming Euro 7 regulations.
While performance figures are not anticipated to surpass those of the Golf R, VW’s engineers emphasize efficiency. The future of performance within Volkswagen is shifting, especially as the company prepares to comply with stricter emissions rules.
Notably, the classic six-speed manual gearbox will not make a return; instead, the T-Roc R will feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, mirroring the setup found in the Golf R. Like its hatchback counterpart, the T-Roc R will be exclusively equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive, ensuring a thrilling driving experience.
Unfortunately for U.S. enthusiasts, the T-Roc R will not be available in the American market, similar to the sought-after Golf R wagon. As Volkswagen moves forward, it also prepares for changes within its R division, with production of the luxurious Touareg R set to cease in 2026.
Looking ahead, the automotive giant has hinted at a fully electric R model, marking a significant shift in their performance vehicle strategy. VW has already teased a combustion-free Polo GTI and is expected to introduce an electric R model powered solely by electric motors.
Stay tuned for more updates as Volkswagen continues to innovate in the world of performance vehicles, and prepare for the arrival of the T-Roc R, a game changer in the crossover segment!
