URGENT UPDATE: Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has just announced plans to fully acquire Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville from Community Health Systems Inc. (CHS), a move that will significantly enhance healthcare access in the rapidly growing Clarksville community.
This acquisition, which marks VUMC’s fourth regional hospital expansion, is expected to elevate patient care in the area, aligning with VUMC’s commitment to delivering high-quality services closer to home. Currently, VUMC holds a 20% minority interest in the hospital and its emergency department, and this full ownership will strengthen its network across Tennessee.
Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and CEO of VUMC, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating, “Expanding our services in Clarksville allows us to better serve the healthcare needs of this rapidly growing area.” The 270-bed facility will join VUMC’s existing regional medical centers, enhancing comprehensive care for both adult and pediatric patients.
Residents of Clarksville and the surrounding Montgomery County can anticipate improved access to vital services, including an OB-GYN hospitalist program and cancer treatment options through the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. VUMC has committed to hiring nearly all employees of Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville who are in good standing, ensuring continuity of care during the transition.
The integration of Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville is particularly significant given Clarksville’s status as Tennessee’s fifth largest city, with a population exceeding 200,000 and a remarkable 24% growth rate over the last decade. With no interruption in patient care expected during this transition, VUMC aims to foster a collaborative environment with existing staff to maintain high standards of healthcare.
Jane Freedman, MD, Deputy CEO of VUMC, expressed enthusiasm about this integration, saying, “We look forward to collaborating with the dedicated physicians, nurses and staff to support the community and expand access to care.”
The acquisition is currently pending regulatory review, but patients can rest assured that their care will remain uninterrupted as both organizations work together to ensure a smooth transition. The existing services at Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville, including a freestanding emergency department and eight physician clinics, will continue to operate under VUMC’s management.
This strategic move not only enhances VUMC’s presence across Middle Tennessee but also reflects its ongoing investment in community health and medical services. As VUMC strengthens its regional network, residents can look forward to a broader range of healthcare options that prioritize convenience and cost-effectiveness.
