Urgent Winter Storm Warnings Issued for New York, New Jersey

UPDATE: Just confirmed by the National Weather Service (NWS), winter storm warnings are now in effect for the Tri-State area, including New York and New Jersey, until 1 p.m. on December 27, 2025. Despite a reduction in snowfall forecasts, dangerous travel conditions remain as a winter storm continues to wreak havoc across the region.

The NWS has released a new map indicating significant changes in weather predictions. Snow totals have been lowered, but the threat is far from over. In a post on X, the NWS New York account stated: “Due to a further northeast shift of mixed precipitation, forecast snowfall totals around NYC and northeast NJ have been lowered.” However, the storm is still expected to produce a glaze of ice and hazardous conditions on roads.

Travelers are urged to exercise caution, with the NWS warning that “overnight travel will be difficult.” Visibility is severely reduced due to snow and ice accumulation, particularly affecting those hitting the roads for the holiday season. As many as 122.4 million Americans are projected to travel during this time, according to AAA, making the winter weather particularly concerning.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul stressed the importance of preparedness in light of the storm. She stated, “New York is no stranger to snow and cold weather… I urge New Yorkers to monitor their local forecast and text their county or borough name to our weather and emergency alerts system.” Her plea highlights the urgency for safety measures as the holiday weekend approaches.

The latest forecasts show potential snow and sleet accumulations of between two to five inches in New York City and New Jersey, and up to six inches in northern metro areas. A light glaze of ice from freezing rain is also complicating conditions. As the storm progresses into Saturday morning, a wintry mix will blanket the region, leading to further travel disruptions.

The NWS issues winter storm warnings when a “significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent.” Meanwhile, winter weather advisories are issued for less severe conditions. However, with the current storm’s intensity, the warning indicates serious risks to commuters and travelers.

With the New Year approaching, travel conditions are expected to slow as Americans navigate through challenging weather. Authorities are calling for vigilance and caution as the storm continues to impact the Northeast.
