Urgent Update: Managing Seasonal Affective Disorder This Fall

URGENT UPDATE: As fall sets in, health experts are sounding the alarm on the rise of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a condition that affects approximately 5% of adults during the darker months. Sarah Esparza, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with Kaiser Permanente Fresno, highlights the emotional toll that shorter days and diminished sunlight can have on mental health.

Latest reports from Fresno, California confirm that the onset of fall can lead to feelings of overwhelm and disruption in daily routines. “The overwhelm, the disruption of schedules, it’s that kind of recipe for struggle and a difficult time,” stated Esparza. Individuals already grappling with mental health issues may find their symptoms exacerbated during this season.

SAD typically emerges in late fall or early winter, impacting those in their early adulthood and even more so among those with pre-existing mental health conditions. “The things that they would usually do that really impact their anxiety or their depression,” Esparza explained, “some of that access to those common coping skills is really removed because of the time change and the darkness setting in sooner.”

Experts urge individuals to take proactive steps to manage their mental health as the seasons change. Strategies include increasing Vitamin D intake and utilizing light therapy, both of which have been shown to be effective in alleviating symptoms of SAD. However, Esparza emphasizes that maintaining structure in daily life is crucial. “Trying to still do all the things that they’ve done throughout the rest of the year,” she advised. “Still participating in their movement and their activity, getting out during the day when they can.”

Moreover, fostering connections with friends and family can significantly enhance mood. “The interaction itself can increase those chemicals that relationally feel impactful for us,” Esparza noted, highlighting the importance of social support during these challenging months.

If you or someone you know continues to struggle with SAD, health professionals strongly recommend consulting with a healthcare provider to develop a tailored treatment plan. With the right support, individuals can navigate this season with resilience.
