UPDATE: Chaos erupted in Navy Yard on Halloween night as hundreds of juveniles gathered near the Navy Yard Metro Station, resulting in multiple arrests and a significant law enforcement response. The situation, which began around 8 p.m., quickly escalated into disorder with fights breaking out and traffic severely disrupted when attendees ignored directions to remain on sidewalks, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
By 11 p.m., law enforcement, including MPD, Metro Transit Police, U.S. Capitol Police, the National Guard, and a Federal Task Force, had successfully dispersed the crowd. Officers maintained a robust presence throughout the night to deter any further disturbances. Fortunately, other Halloween festivities throughout the city were reported to have proceeded without incident.
Authorities confirmed that a total of five arrests were made. Among those detained was an 18-year-old from Maryland charged with carrying a prohibited weapon. Additionally, two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old faced charges including failure to obey, resisting arrest, public marijuana consumption, and affray. Reports indicate that the Metro Transit Police also made further arrests during the chaos.
One police sergeant sustained minor injuries and received treatment from DC Fire and EMS. In response to the disturbances, Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith announced that the MPD and partner agencies would enhance their presence in Navy Yard to prevent similar scenarios in the future. Streets near M Street Southeast are expected to be closed, with increased patrols for the safety and security of residents.
The MPD is urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the Halloween night disturbances by calling 202-727-9099 or texting 50411. As the situation continues to develop, residents and visitors in the area should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
