URGENT UPDATE: Residents of San Antonio’s Southeast Side are sounding the alarm over rising crime rates and a noticeable decline in police presence. A chilling attempted break-in was captured on home security cameras early Sunday morning, escalating fears for neighborhood safety.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. last Sunday, Harrison and Savana Yount witnessed a man lurking in their backyard, captured on their exterior cameras. The footage reveals the suspect attempting to force entry by pulling on their back door handle. “It was one of the creepiest things,” Savana Yount recounted. “I immediately grabbed my phone and called the police.”
Seconds after the couple reported the incident, local authorities arrived and detained the intruder, who was later identified as experiencing a mental health issue, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
Residents are increasingly alarmed by the lack of police patrols in the area. “There has been a lot less officers patrolling the area because Kate Schenck Elementary is no longer there,” one resident noted, reflecting on how the school’s closure has impacted community safety. “When the school was in session, we used to see police officers during the day and night.”
Another neighbor, identified as Amber, expressed her concerns, stating, “It’s pretty scary because you never know what people are intending to do.” Gunshots have been reported as well, adding to the community’s anxiety.
While the Younts shared their unsettling experience, they also emphasized the importance of neighborly connections in feeling secure. “We know our neighbors, we love the neighborhood,” Savana stated. “This was a huge eye-opener, one of those very unexpected things.”
Residents are now calling for more consistent police presence to restore confidence in their safety. The community’s growing unease underscores a pressing need for local authorities to address these concerns. As crime maps indicate troubling trends, the demand for immediate action is louder than ever.
As the situation develops, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to ensure their safety and that of their neighbors. Stay tuned for updates as officials respond to the community’s urgent request for increased police visibility.
